24-Restore specializes in taking care of Fire & Water Restoration in Greenville, NC and we want to remind you that hurricane season typically starts in June and runs through November. Since June is next month, we want to give you all the tools you need to prepare to minimize any damage that could be caused by hurricanes. Hurricanes are out of our control, but hopefully with these tips you can be prepared for when disaster strikes. Follow these tips to insure your home’s safety.

1. Fasten and Secure All Doors and Windows

These openings can make or break the security of your home during a hurricane. Making sure that everything is secure is crucial to minimize any damage. If a window broken, you can let in a lot of unwanted storm elements and also greatly increase pressure under your roof. The best way to secure these is to invest in storm shutters or perhaps even boarding up your windows and doors. Also avoid using any of the masking tape or the duct tape trick. It barely does anything and will probably damage the paint job you have on your window, door, or wall.

2. Check Your Roof

Hurricanes do the best damage to the roof of the house, so it’s important to check to see how it’s holding up. The best way to determine if your roof is holding up is to physically get up there and take a look. Do a walk through and look for loose shingles, missing shingles, or generally damaged shingles. You should also look to see if you have any plants or biological matter growing on your roof. Check and remove any items that could cause any lethal projectiles during a storm. You may also want to seal areas you think are susceptible to damage especially where the wires enter your home. You may want to invest in hurricane straps to secure your roof to your home or invest in roofing cement. If something looks like it’s out of order and beyond your capabilities, you should contact a professional.

3. Make Sure Your Trees are Trimmed

Trees can cause the most damage to any home during a storm. Check to see if there are any loose or dead parts of trees near your house. Sometimes insurance won’t completely cover the full cost of the damage, so try to be diligent about when and if a tree needs to be maintained before it causes more damage than what it’s worth.
