Prevent Fires
Over 350,000 fires occur in the US each year, and about half of these fires start in the kitchen. A fire can be devastating to your home and your family. That’s why it’s important to do all that you can to try to prevent a fire from happening:
- You should keep multiple fire extinguishers in your home. Since kitchen fires are the most common, one of these extinguishers should be kept in your kitchen. If your home is multiple stories, make sure that you have at least one extinguisher on each floor.
- If you experience a grease fire while you’re cooking, DO NOT move the pan or put water in the pan, as both of these can cause the fire to spread. Instead, turn off the burner immediately and then smother a fire using another pan or a baking sheet.
- Discuss and practice a fire safety plan with your family. Figure out the closest evacuation route for each member of the family and make sure that they know what to do and where to go in case of a fire.
- Install smoke alarms in each bedroom and in open areas throughout your home. Test your smoke detectors every month to make sure that they’re working. If they’re not working, replace the batteries.
Holiday Fire Prevention
The holiday season is a time of gift giving, carol singing, and quality time with friends and family. However, unfortunately, it is also a time when people are at great risk for fires in the home because of Christmas decorations. So, here are some fire prevention tips for you this holiday season:
- Whenever you leave your home or go to bed, you should make sure that all candles are out, all holiday lights are unplugged, and your fireplace is fully extinguished.
- When your fireplace is in use, make sure to monitor all pets and small children. Don’t leave your fire unattended, and keep the area free of tripping hazards and objects that could catch on fire. Also, have your fireplace inspected and cleaned annually.
- Real Christmas trees are extremely flammable, especially once they begin to dry out. That’s why it’s important to dispose of your tree at the end of the holiday season. Also, never place your Christmas tree close to your fireplace or any other heating source (maintain a distance of 10 feet, at least).
- If you’re using a space heater, only use it when you are at home and awake. Also, be sure to keep it several feet from all walls, and remove any objects (especially clothing, towels, etc) from its vicinity. Also, never use an extension cord to power a heating appliance.
- If you notice that any of your Christmas lights have exposed wire or show any other signs of damage, dispose of them immediately.
